So I think many people that I encounter or interact with use Facebook but not for ads but try to market through Facebook timeline which can work but to a very small degree.
So before we get into the meat and potatoes of how to So one traffic source that has a tremendous reach is Facebook advertisements and it can reach here in the US, South America, Africa…. actually it doesn’t matter the reach is limitless you can go just about everyone in the world.
If you look at the info-graph below you will how broad your audience can be these limits however in the graph below are for one ad.
What I truly want you to take away from this data below is this…. If you read the statistics below you can narrow who you actually advertise to and speak directly to your avatar.
So even if your avatar description is as follows:
- 24-32 years old
- lives in South Africa
- holds an engineering & MBA degree
- Speak English & Spanish
- Graduated between 1985-1990
- likes fishing and poetry…..
Do you see how POWERFUL this is? You can laser focus your ad/message that is why you will hear the saying “The riches are in the niches…“. So now that I have emphasized how effective, how critical and how powerful your reach can be with Facebook advertising we can now move into our main subject at hand and discuss custom audiences.
I had to emphasize the value of Facebook ads because several of my business partners and myself have made a lot of our revenue just utilizing this traffic source. I have talked to many of my subscribers who were on the fence or did not know the effects of this source and now that you see the reach and value I think I will have the attention of those that will actually leverage this tactic below.
So without further ado, lets talk custom audiences. I spent more money than I should have in the early days of me using Facebook ads because of not excluding current customers that have already purchased from me. So being able to use this ninja trick allows you to in essence segment your list and your advertising approach.
Now when I first started to dabble with Facebook ads I did not know how to exclude existing customers from my advertisements. I wanted only to market to certain people in my custom audience because some had already bought certain products and others still have not. Well in this tutorial I am going to show you how to do just that. Remember this is important because as some of you know that are building email lists now you know that you must segment your list (sometimes as black and white as buyers vs. non-buyers).
This strategy is what I used it for because I did not want to continue marketing to someone that has already purchased a product so I needed to figure out how to exclude them. I only wanted to continue marketing for new customer purchases via my list that has not purchased already, then I wanted to communicate differently with those that already have products with me more so with content related to where they are in their business (value driven).
Step #1: Creating An Audience for Your Customers
Login to your Facebook Ad account, and select “Audiences” over on the left hand side. Then click “Create Audience.”
Step #2: Now Select Custom Audience from Your Website
Now the next thing we want to do is, select “Custom Audience from your Website” so we can ensure Facebook will keep track of your visitors going forward that come through your website. You can use the other options but those are for other tactics that I teach privately and potentially will drop a blog post or two regarding how to use these other options in such a ninja type way.
Step #3: Now You Decide How You Want to Build Your Audience
Think of a name for your audience and write out a description to be able to reference as you start to build out different custom audiences, then next you decide what URL you want Facebook to build an audience from.
So basically what this means is whatever URL you put into the field below, Facebook will build the audience over time of any visitor that hits that page you entered. This now will allow you to run certain ads to only that group of people.. How cool is that? (yeah very cool!!)
Wow I am so excited some marketers really segment their list in several different ways and now you can market how you want, when you want and how you want.
Now remember when trying to market anything and those of us already in the internet marketing industry it is very important to know your numbers. So when a customer comes to your site the first page could just be the homepage, or it can be a capture page or something type of funnel you are trying to get them through.
So in order to build an audience of your customers you need to enter in your page someone would see once they opt into your list or funnel… some like to call this the thank you page the customer sees immediately after a purchase.
Ok now the last step we need to do is to hi the “Create” button so we can save our audience.
Step #4: We Need To Place Tracking Code on Site
This step is fairly easy we need to copy and paste the code and place it on the website but on the opt in page. Basically this is the page we described in step 3 where once they purchase something or opt in its that thank you page.
Facebook actually has a write up that is super simple but this is critical that it is done because this guarantees that Facebook is tracking everything just as we need it.
If you are using a WordPress platform like myself you could drop it into a text box widget either in the head or sidebar. Once you opt into my list if you are still having issues I can help point you in the right direction I love doing Google Hangouts and helping you figure this stuff out.
Step #5: Viola!!!! You Completed This Course 😉
If you see the screen below, you’re all set. Facebook will now build an audience based on people who saw whatever URL you entered in the parameters. Ok, get set, get ready, lets make the magic start happening so we can market like a ninja and build that list and convert effectively.
Step #6: Now We Create A Facebook Ad Excluding That Audience
Ok so it took us 5 steps to get to the step we wanted to learn from the get go. I am so excited now because I know even for myself I struggled with this for so long so I am very excited about how it will now help so many of you.
I wanted to give a quick example lets say your a real estate agent and you have a customer list and that list has 100 customers and of those 100 customers 20 customers have purchased a home with you.
You would not want to send listings to customers that just closed on a home with the last 3 to 6 months so those customers you would exclude from your advertising. Perhaps those customers you could market home warranty policies or different products for existing home owners.
For those new to wanting to market their existing business is the lightbulb going off yet? Do you see the value in what we are trying to do now? Ok, now that I have everyone caught up let’s move forward and get this show on the road.
Let’s create a new ad with the power editor or the regular builder but I always use the power editor. Now as your building your ad make sure to exclude the audience we just created so they do not see your advertisement. See the magic? The ad is now only showing to people that have not purchased your product. #winning
Step #7: Sit Back & Watch How Your Audience Grows
If you go back to the “Audience” tab you can see the column named “People” and see the number change over time. It will grow daily because people are being directed their via your website each and every day. The most amazing thing about all this though is that Facebook is keeping track of this for you because of that tracking code we placed on your website. Man I LOVE that!!
I would love to hear comments if you have attempted this tactic comment below or shoot me an email in the event you are having issues with any of the steps. If you have not joined my list I would highly suggest it I send lots of great marketing tips and how-to’s in order to help you grow your existing business.
Some marketers spend most of their time studying new techniques. That is great, but don’t fall into the trap of studying, but never doing. When I first started learning internet marketing it was a nightmare… Why? I spent so much time reading, I spent a LOT of money on courses because nothing was all in one place so my learning curve was crazy.
I teach a lot of the meat and potatoes and for those that want to cut the learning curve I offer courses that cut that by 50% and learning these things will help you monetize any list, grow your list and how to convert your list.
Study, create a plan, execute that plan, and track your results (I call this learn and earn). If you have any degree of success, teach it to someone else. Learn how to begin Facebook advertising with custom audiences, and learn how to write your own checks like I have done online.
There are some ninja tricks you can do with custom audiences by ripping Facebook page or groups users for any niche you are currently involved with and market directly to that subset of prospects. This is so powerful and has been a sizable piece of my income because I go and rip a niche, market to them, grow my list and then convert into sales.
Sound familiar to you experienced marketers? The 3 C’s of marketing (create traffic, capture leads, convert to sales) is what the ultimate goal with any strategy.
If you loved that…..You will LOVE this… I will see you on the inside…
